An efficient hybrid MAC protocol for high-speed LANs

This paper investigates the effects of asymmetric traffic load distributions and increasing data transmission rates on the operation of two types of hybrid protocol, one utilising reservation and the other scheduling. The Reservation/TDMA scheme is shown to be highly robust. A method of priorities is then introduced into this scheme to maximise the efficiency of operation under asymmetric traffic load distributions and high data transmission rates. The simulated performance characteristics obtained with this new hybrid protocol demonstrate that even with a high degree of traffic load asymmetry, a high traffic throughput is maintained at data transmission rates up to 5 Gbits^-^1.
