Regarding disabled people, any environment causing disabling environment not only drastically degrades the individual’s quality of life but also increase their dependence upon other people, thus raising serious burdens to the government. Since the portion of the disabled people in the population has continuously increased, especially due to the high ageing speed in Korea, this study intends to identify the disabled people’s demand for and effect of interior environment on perceived improvement in independence. As method of study, structured questionnaire survey was used to for 80 home-staying disabled persons in a rural area and Seoul. As a result of this study, 25 items for interior factors that can be commonly applied to houses for disabled people in both rural and urban area were identified and the surveyed disabled people’s requests for amendment of these items appeared high. Looking into the details of these items, installation of safety handles, expansion of bath room and use of non-slippery floor materials took the high requests of the surveyed people. They expected their degree of independence will be improved at their current house if these items are renovated, thus the effect was verified. The result of this study implied that the Korean government can assert the proper houses as a means to improve the social welfare system and to reduce the welfare burden of the government. This is significant in providing empirical evidence about effect of improvement.
