Research on Inherent Physical Mechanism for the Impulsiveness of Aggregated Network Traffic

In view of the existing obscure views on the inherent physical mechanism for the impulsiveness of aggregated network traffic, based on the proposed extended ON/OFF model, this paper mathematically demonstrates that the impulsiveness of aggregated network traffic is caused by the behaviors of source traffic rates, but not by the behaviors of ON and OFF durations. In addition, the impulsiveness cannot be characterized by the H parameter.Simulations validate the accuracy of the presented theoretical results. This paper reveals the inherent physical mechanism for the impulsiveness of aggregated network traffic, and hence provides a theoretical foundation for traffic engineering.
