Revisão sistemática do desenvolvimento e dos usos da Classificação Internacional de Atenção Primária Systematic review of International Classification of Primary Care's development and uses

This study aimed to realize a systematic review of International Classification of Primary Care’s (ICPC) literature, its use and development. A systematic review of the literature was carried out in MEDLINE/PubMed. Two researchers selected and independently classified the articles. Ninety-nine articles were selected to the systematic review and the first of them was published in 1985. Grouping periods of five years, it is possible to notice a growth in ICPC production (6, 8, 23, 33, 29), since the latest period do not have five years and it is around the same level as before. Most articles were written in English (92,9%). European countries, specially Netherland and Australia, have a highlighted scientific production. Public health journals centralize ICPC’s production (41,4%). Initial production has objectives related to history and methodology; once the classification is solidified, articles on application become more prevalent (49,0%). ICPC shows important article’s growth, which may reflect its use consolidation. Despite some limitations, it is considered easy to use. It is necessary that its use do not be restricted to isolated researches and medical professionals. It should be implemented in primary health services to guide actions and health politics.
