Experimental Study of Control Strategy for Wind Generation System

Due to the uncontrollable natural characteristic of wind speed and the large size of wind turbine, it is very difficult and sometimes impossible to do the experimental study of control strategy for wind generation system in laboratory. In this case a wind turbine simulator is used. This paper presents a method to simulate wind turbine, which includes the calculation method of the torque-speed curve from the rated parameter of actual wind turbine and the implementation of the wind turbine simulator. By using this method, many wind turbines can be simulated easily in the laboratory. Using the proposed wind turbine simulator, an experimental study of control strategy for a 10 kW wind generation system is implemented, which confirm the validity of the wind turbine simulation method. A novel maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method with feed forward and feedback control is also represented to improve the efficiency of wind power conversion by using the proposed wind turbine simulator.
