The purine nucleotide cycle. 3. Oscillations in metabolite concentrations during the operation of the cycle in muscle extracts.

Abstract Oscillations occur during the operation of the purine nucleotide cycle in particle-free extracts of rat skeletal muscle when glucose is provided as an energy source. The period and amplitude of the oscillations are affected by the concentrations of hydrogen ions, orthophosphate, KCl, DPN, and hexokinase. The oscillations in the concentrations of adenine mononucleotide, adenylosuccinate, and IMP occur in synchrony with oscillations in the concentration of DPNH. The results show that the controls of the operation of the purine nucleotide cycle and of glycolysis are closely linked.
