A Multipurpose Internal Wave Facility.

Abstract : The need for a better understanding of internal waves has increased in recent years as a result of increased interest in the sea. Questions regarding the precise mechanism by which these waves are generated remain to be answered, even though a number of well formulated theories have been advanced. The need for quantitative experiments to reinforce or repudiate these theories is evident. The facility described in this report was designed and constructed to help fulfill this need. The facility consists of a versatile internal wave tank 116.5 ft. long x 7.5 ft. high x 2 ft. wide, a 60 hp pump, a variable pitch axial flow fan and a servo-hydraulic mechanical surface and internal wave generator system. Mechanical waves can be generated at the interface between two liquid layers and at the surface of the upper layer. Shear flows can be obtained by pumping either of the two layers or by blowing air over the upper layer. Wind generated surface waves can also be obtained with the fan. This report describes the facility, presents calibration data, outlines the available instrumentation and discusses briefly some of the research to be performed. (Modified author abstract)
