SPEED HUMP EFFECTIVENESS AND PUBLIC ACCEPTANCE

As part of the San Antonio, Texas, speed hump pilot program, 500 questionnaires were distributed to residents of the 10 streets involved; 199 questionnaires were returned. Of the respondents, 77% wanted to retain the humps, while only 20% wanted them removed. The worst features of the speed humps were reported to be the noise (19%), too low (18%), and too few (11%); the best features were that they reduced speeds (67%) and they made the street safer (5%). Speed measurements showed that the 12-ft (4-m) speed humps averaged speed reduction of 12 mph (19 kph) at the speed hump and an average drop of 7 mph (11 kph) between pairs of humps.
