Discrete vs. Continuous Approach in Crowd Dynamics Modeling Using GPU Computing

The aim of the study is threefold: firstly to compare the possibilities of using general-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU) in continuous and discrete crowd dynamics simulation; secondly, to compare selected properties of analogical implementations of crowd dynamics using a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit (GPU), and thirdly, to draw conclusions on the applicability of GPUs in engines of professional crowd simulations. For this purpose, the authors have implemented two models of pedestrian dynamics: continuous Social Forces model and discrete, cellular automata–based Social Distances model. The presented simulations refer to outdoor, large-area pedestrian movement.
