The leading edge of science in Canada

Abstract While the elite of science have often been studied, comparatively little work has been done on those scientists who are just now becoming part of the elite. Termed “leading” or “hot” scientists, they are considered for Canada in terms of citation analysis. The proportion of leading scientists in Canada is lower than expected on the basis of all scientists. The leading scientists are distributed equitably in terms of geography, and most are concentrated in universities or hospitals. About two-thirds publish in the United States, and only about a tenth in Canada. This method of identification offers a new tool to the science policy-maker.
