Design and Optimization of linear motor using Halbach Magnet Array with T shape magnets

HMA (Halbach magnet array) is the sum of vertical magnets and horizontal magnets while the conventional magnet array only has vertical magnets. Conventional studies on the linear motor with HMA have been tried to increase driving force and to reduce force ripple. In the study of Lee [1], the author suggests HMA with trapezoidal magnet array. The magnet array has high mean force and low ripple. But there are problems. First, it is very difficult to make the trapezoidal shape of magnet. And the assembly of the array is difficult. In this paper, we suggest HMA linear motor with “T” shape magnets. There are advantages with the magnet array. Firstly, compared to trapezoidal magnet, it is easy to manufacture. Second, it is easy to assemble the magnet array. Based on the SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming) method, we propose a optimized linear motor with HMA using “T” shape magnets. The linear motor has large force and small ripple.
