The relationship between speed and accidents is discussed and details given of the effect of introducing speed cameras in West London. The West London Speed Camera Project was launched in October 1992. Camera sites were selected based on a high incidence of a) speed related accidents, b) serious and fatal accidents and c) single vehicle accidents involving loss of control. Figures are given for the reduction in accidents observed. These include a 36% reduction in fatal and serious injury accidents and an 8% reduction in slight injury accidents whilst accident figures in other areas rose.
