Infection is a leading cause of death in critically iII patients. Its rising incidence and appearance in potents mechanisms of microorganisms virulence have been related to increasing in resistance to the broader-spectrum antibiotics This article reviews some of the aspects involving different infections in critically ill patients such as the most frequently isolated pathogens and the controversies about the use and misuse of antibiotics.
