Comparison of voltage sources with current sources on unbalanced differential microstrip line

Now voltage sources are widely used for differential signaling. However, a common mode current is excited in unbalance differential transmission line. In this paper, common-mode excitation by differential current sources is compared with that by differential voltage sources in the unbalanced differential transmission line. A equivalent circuit describing the differential transmission line are used for evaluation of common mode current generated by the differential voltage or current sources. As a result, by using the current sources, the primary common mode current can be reduced by about 15 dB at 100 MHz than that of the voltage sources.
