Recognition of sloppy, hand-printed characters

This report describes a pattern recognition scheme particularly intended to handle noisy and highly distorted data. The sample is subjected to a set of tests at the conclusion of which a single decision is made. The decision is made on the basis of experience obtained from prior processing of labelled samples. The method has been applied to hand-printed English capitals but is evidently general. Results are given for some trials made on the IBM 709.
