ENHANCING STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING OF STATISTIC TOPIC USING TI-NSPIRE GRAPHING CALCULATOR

In general, the potential for the graphing calculators (GC) to radically change the teaching of statistics is enourmous. Students can analyse data numerically and graphically, compare expected results to observed results, create models to describe relationships, and generate simulation to understand statistical situation in ways that would not be possible without technology. Further, it allows students to use real data to real situation, move easily from tabular representations, graphical representations, and symbolic representations of the data, and provide the opportunity to think about how each representation contributes to the understanding the data. These activities will enable the students to create relationship in their own mind and contructing their own knowledge  derived from their basic knowledge and experience during statistical classes.  This paper elaborates how the TI-Nspire GC can be used to enhance students' understanding in learning statistics and present a quasi-experimenal study which investigate students' performance in learning statistics using this tool. Teh result showed that studnets in the expermenatl group (TI-Nspire strategy) had  significantly better score in the Statsistics Achievement Test than those from the control group (conventional instructional strategy). These findings indicate that students who were exposed to the use of TI-Nspire performed better in the test. The use of this strategy enable students to exploit the fullest advantages of the use of GC in achieving in-depth undertanding of statistical concepts and facilitating students in solving statistical problems.
