Psychosocial Factors at Work: The Epidemiological Perspective

The belief that adverse psychosocial work factors or “stresses at work” affect health is widespread in the general public and media. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a leading cause of mortality and disability in the industrialised world and the health outcome, which has been most commonly related to work stress. Interestingly, however, the status of psychosocial factors at work as a cause of CHD is still a controversial issue, despite evidence accumulated over decades.
