Spectographic Analysis of Vocal Response to Pain Stimuli in Infants with Down's Syndrome

Spectographic analyses of the pain cries of 30 infants with Down's syndrome (all demonstrating trisomy 21–22) show several abnormal acoustic characteristics, thus confirming by an objective method earlier observations on the voices of infants with this syndrome. The abnormal cry parameters (‘stuttering’, long duration, low pitch, flat melody form, nasality) show highly significant differences from the analyses of pain cries from 120 normal infants.
