Use of Antibiotics in Shanghai Second and Third Level Hospitals During the Period of 2007-2008

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the utilization of antibiotics in Shanghai second and third level hospitals.METHODS:The data concerning the number of prescriptions, consumption sum and DDDs of antibiotics in 12 second level hospitals and 14 third level hospitals in Shanghai during the period 2007-2008 were statistically analyzed.RESULTS:The proportion of the antibiotics in total in second level hospitals was higher than that in third level hospitals in terms of consumption sum.The consumption sum, number of prescriptions and average cost of antibiotics in second level and third level hospitals increased to a different degree, showing differences among different categories. In respect of consumption sum,the second generation cephalosporins, quinolones and the third generation cephalosporins dominated the first 3 places in both the second and the third level hospitals. In the top 10 drugs on the list of consumption sum, cefotiam and cefoxitin showed a larger extent of increase in both second and third level hospitals. Most of the antibiotics which ranked in the first 10 places in DDDs were of similar categories in second and third level hospitals.CONCLUSION:There were some differences in the use of antibiotics between the second and third level hospitals.Great importance should be attached to clinical rational use of antibiotics.
