SBAS in Urban Environment: Scenarios, Applicability and Challenges

The use of satellite based augmentation systems (SBAS) like the United States WAAS or the European EGNOS is attractive for many applications, not only for manned aircraft. One main reason for this is that there is no extra telemetry system and hardware needed for receiving GNSS integrity information. Nevertheless, looking more in detail into the use of SBAS in urban and other challenging environments, one will realize the bottlenecks that appear during RTCA DO-229D conform processing of the data. On the other side even for minor changes in the SBAS processing, it is important to analyze the impact of the changes in terms of accuracy, continuity, availability and integrity as well as the fact that the result is no longer standard conform. This paper will discuss some of this topics based on a DO-229D conform implementation and some modifications necessary to process data from low flying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) and regular cars in urban scenarios.
