Direct Measurement of Power Angles in Wide-area Power System Dynamic Supervisory

Power angle is one of the most important parameters to represent power system operation security. It reflects the operational states of generator units and the stability of the whole power system. A method to directly measure the power angle of generators is presented. Using the global positioning system (GPS) clock signal and the power angle measurement system developed in this paper, a novel power angle measurement system is developed. Measures of both hardware and software are used to increase the performance of the measurement system. The results of both the power system dynamic simulation tests and field operation show the effectiveness of the developed system. The system has been imbedded into a phasor measurement unit (PMU), which enables the PMU to synchronously provide complete information of the wide area power systems.
