Abstract The oxidation of methyl mercaptan with molecular oxygen was studied in the presence of metal salt catalysts. Products of the oxidation at 30°C in strongly alkaline solutions were dimethyl disulfide and hydrogen peroxide. Results indicated that the chemical reaction in solution is first order with respect to both methyl mercaptan and dissolved oxygen.
