Emotions in Driving

Abstract This chapter aims to systematically explore the relationship and effects between affect and driving behaviors. Even though some driving models partially address drivers’ affective factors, the majority of them have focused on cognitive aspects. Thus, to understand driver behavior in a more holistic way, more systematic reviews and empirical research including affective aspects of driving behavior are required. First, the current driving models are briefly described and the research gap is identified. Then, the effects of affective states on driving performance are delineated from multiple perspectives. Finally, theoretical and practical future works are discussed. This chapter is intended to help researchers construct a more naturalistic and generic driving behavior model, conceptualize affect detection research with a clearer idea of what affect needs to be detected and why, and develop an affect regulation model and adaptive system for multiple drivers.
