Management of Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor-treated Patients in the Emergency and Critical Care Setting

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are the most effective treatment for some forms of depression. Unfortunately, these agents cause many adverse reactions and interact with a number of other drugs. We review the pharmacology, side effects, and interactions of MAOIs, and focus on how MAOI-treated patients can be safely managed in critical care settings.
