Subroutine assembly

The article by Kanner [1] in the July issue of the Communicati(ms prompted the writing of this description of art assembly system that has been in use on the Ferranti Pegasus computer since 1956, when the computer was first available. I t is broadly similar to Kanner's system except that only one pass is needed, no table is kept of the information about the subroutine library and it is directly possible for the programmer's own private subroutines to use the assembly system. In this communication, the nomenclature of the Ferranti system is used.
