Epidemiology of Stroke-Related Disability and Rehabilitation Outcome

The foundation of rehabilitation practice rests in the clinician‘s ability to predict functional, independent living, and economic outcomes. Stroke-related motor deficits appear to be more easily compensated for than sensory loss or cognitive problems. Activities of Daily Living deficits appear more refractory than ambulatory problems. Truncal stability, upper-extremity motor function, bowel and bladder continence, presenting functional severity, and neuropsychologic status represent key prognostic determinants of ultimate functional status. In contrast, home discharge depends more on demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, such as age, sex, educational level, and marital status.
