Acoustical investigation on the engine-transmission interaction

The NVH optimization of single components of a machine system, e.g. engine with transmission, leads not always to improvements of the complete system. Single optimized components may result in unwanted noise when combined due to unforeseen interaction. Therefore it is crucial for the development of low noise products to consider the entire noise generation path (excitation, structural transfer behavior, radiation). The Institute for Machine Elements of Aachen Technical University and the Institute for Combustion Engines of Aachen Technical University developed in a cooperation a simulation method to investigate the noise generation path of a engine-transmission powertrain [1].
