Brake squeal : modeling and experiments

A non-linear model has been proposed by the authors for predicting the onset of brake squeal in the frequency range 1 to 5 kHz. In addition to disk flexibility, the model takes into account the floating nature of the caliper. The instability corresponding to squeal appears even with a constant friction coefficient between disk and pad. The model is used to study the effects of parameters such as braking pressure, rotating speed of the disk etc. An experimental set-up was built for measuring brake squeal (sound and structure borne sound) and is going to be used to verify the model.
