Abstract : A discussion is given on the importance of damping in fiber-reinforced composites and is followed by concise definitions of the various measures of damping. The current state of the theory of damping in fiber-reinforced composites is reviewed for perfectly-bonded viscoelastic composites, yielding-matrix composites, and those in which slip takes place at the fiber-matrix interface. General trends in stiffness and damping of composites with polymeric matrices are reviewed. (Author)
