Performance Evaluation of Xen, KVM, and Proxmox Hypervisors

HardwarevirtualizationplaysamajorroleinITinfrastructureoptimizationinprivatedatacentersand publiccloudplatforms.ThoughtherearemanyadvancementsinCPUarchitectureandhypervisors recently,butoverheadstillexistsasthereisavirtualizationlayerbetweentheguestoperatingsystem andphysicalhardware.Thisisparticularlywhenmultiplevirtualguestsarecompetingforresources onthesamephysicalhardware.Understandingperformanceofavirtualizationlayeriscrucialasthis wouldhaveamajorimpactonentireITinfrastructure.Thisarticlehasperformedanextensivestudy oncomparingtheperformanceofthreehypervisorsKVM,Xen,andProxmoxVE.Theexperiments showedthatKVMdelivers thebestperformanceonmostof theselectedparameters.Xenexcels infilesystemperformanceandapplicationperformance.ThoughProxmoxhasdeliveredthebest performanceinonlythesub-categoryofCPUthroughput.Thisarticlesuggestsbest-suitedhypervisors fortargetedapplications.
