Wireless access to ATM

Wireless ATM (WATM) has been studied intensely recently. While different WATM demonstration networks are carried out all over the world, commercial IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is competing for more consumers with wired LAN. If some modifications and extra protocols are applied on WLAN, quality of service (QoS) of different services is guaranteed. It is a practical way to achieve wireless access to ATM. The essence and model of Media Access Control (MAC) protocol are given in the article. The authors present the detailed process to improve WLAN for the access to ATM network.
