An integrated electronic ballast for small wattage high intensity discharge lamps

In this paper, a novel electronic ballast integrating a low frequency square-wave half-bridge inverter (HBI) with the center-tapped flyback-type pre-regulator for small wattage high intensity discharge (HID) lamps is proposed. As a result, not only high power factor and high efficiency can be achieved, but also the problem of acoustic resonance and the cataphoretic effect can be avoided. The experimental results of a 35 W HID hardware prototype are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed ballast.
