Dual energy CT tissue quantitation for Monte-Carlo based treatment planning for brachytherapy

A new experimental method using dual-energy CT tissue-quantization (DECTQ) is proposed to identify compositional and geometric characteristics of tissue heterogeneities in and around low-energy seed implant sites. The method is based on the assumption that the total attenuation coefficient of an arbitrary material can be expressed as a linear combination of mass attenuation coefficients of two basis materials. The authors have validated the method in the energy range from 10-1000 keV demonstrating that all cross-section data needed for Monte Carlo simulation in this energy range can be obtained with satisfactory accuracy.
