MULTIVARIATE GEOGRAPHICAL VARIATION IN THE WOLF CANIS LUPUS L.

ecological data could be analysed in the same manner. The last comprehensive taxonomic study of North American wolves was that of Goldman (Young and Goldman, 1944). It consisted primarily of qualitative skull and pelage descriptions and failed to show clearly the nature and the extent of geographical variation in the species as a whole. During the present study groups of specimens have been compared with respect to complexes of metrical characters. This has disclosed multivariate trends of variation between several N earctic wolf populations. The techniques used and the results obtained are exposed and discussed in this paper.
