Minimizing the bypass circuit: a rational step in the development of paediatric perfusion

The cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuits currently used in most units performing open-heart surgery in neonates and infants are too large. Indeed, one could reasonably argue that they are totally inappropriate. Much of the machinery was designed many years ago, usually with adult cardiac surgery in mind.
