This paper describes the advantages to using concrete block pavements. They are environmentally friendly since no petroleum products are involved, pavers can be lifted without jackhammers and the great majority of pavers can be re-used when the surface is reinstated. Paved areas are available to traffic immediately on completion with no curing period. In environmentally sensitive areas and where trees and grass are located close to the paved surface, the use of open paving stones, containing soil pockets, permits rainfall to return to the ground and water vegetation. The principal sources of failure of concrete block pavements, carrying traffic loads are discussed.
