Survey of speech coding techniques for digital cellular communication systems

This paper provides a survey of speech coding techniques currently used in digital cellular communication systems. Speech production and perception are reviewed. General coding structures are presented. The history and recent refinements of a variety of specific speech coding techniques are reviewed, including short term (LPC) prediction and quantization, long term pitch prediction and quantization, and excitation modeling. Finally, the speech coding algorithms currently in use in digital cellular communications are discussed.
