Sustainable Game Farming: Considerations for Canadian Policy Makers and Legislators

ABSTRACT Game farming is a contentious issue despite its long history, world-wide. Confusion around the issue is reflected in Canadian provincial legislation, which shows an inconsistency in the approach to regulation of this industry. This paper examines existing legislation and the biological, socio-economic and ethical factors which policy makers should consider when formulating legislation to regulate game farming. If game farming is to be sustainable, the costs for disease control and enforcement of regulations should be internalized. The formulation of enabling legislation for game farming should proceed with extreme caution if viable populations of native wild animals are to be maintained in perpetuity.
