Noise Reduction Via Harmonic Current Injection for Concentrated-Winding Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines

This paper presents a control method to reduce the radiated noise of permanent magnet synchronous machines. This is achieved by the superposition of harmonic currents in addition to those applied by field oriented control. These current harmonics reduce the oscillation of magnetic field forces in the air gap and can particularly reduce mode zero oscillations that are known for their major influence on the vibrations of traction drives. An improvement of over −30 dB was found for an investigated machine when an optimal harmonic current of 7th order is applied with considering optimal phase angle. It is also shown that a reduction of radial field forces will result in higher torque ripple.
