Research on lightning performance of 220 kV split-level cross arm tower in mountainous area

A new type of 220kV split-level cross arm tangent tower is designed to reduce the lighting trip-out rate of mountain transmission lines after taking full account of the impact of mountainous terrain slope. Tower multi-wave impedance model and tower grounding equivalent circuit were established under the new split-level cross arm structure. Lightning withstand level of the new tower is calculated by PSCAD software, and lightning back striking rate was calculated, modified electrical geometry model is used to solve the shielding failure rate of the new tower, and the calculation formulation is derived based on the geometric model. Lightning trip-out rate of this new tower at several slope conditions was calculated and the results were analyzed. The results obtained by comparing conventional tower lightning trip-out rate with the split-level cross arm tower lightning trip-out rate showed that split-level cross arm structure can improve the lightning withstand level of the tower effectively.
