Plastic optical module having a pre-insert molded SC ferrule and a laser diode with mode-field converter

Summary form only given. Low-cost and mass-producibility are keywords for optical modules required to construct optical access network and high-speed data transmission network. Recently, new concept plastic modules using a short fiber with a ferrule, which is put in a V-groove formed on a silicon-optical-bench (SOB) were reported from some groups. In this paper, we report a newly developed molded plastic package, which has a standard SC ferrule pre-inserted and precisely located for the alignment between a fiber and a laser diode. The structure and characteristics of this new optical module using a laser diode with mode-field converter and a waveguide-type photodetector as a monitor are also described.
