Background Thromboembolic disease is an increasingly recognized complication of several vasculitides. Few cases of venous thrombosis were reported in the literature during Takayasu arteritis1,2. The possibility of venous disease was first described in 1968 by Sen3. Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of venous thromboembolic events in Takayasu arteritis and discuss the possibility of either causal or casual association between these two conditions. Methods We retrospectively included 34 Takayasu arteritis patients according to the American College of Rheumatology Criteria4 from 1983 to 2013. Among which, we studied cases who presented a venous thromboembolic event confirmed by image data. Results Three female patients suffering from Takayasu arteritis has presented a venous thrombosis. Conclusions Venous thromboses in Takayasu's disease are not well known. In the Takaysu disease there is an activation of platelets and the coagulation cascade which might be the cause of venous thrombosis. Furthermore it may also occur through an inflammation process which leads to stenoses. However, due to the smaller sample size, it should be noted that a direct cause-effect relationship cannot be established.
