METHODOLOGY TO OBTAIN AIRPORT SAFETY INDICATORS USING SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

This paper aims to develop and test a quantitative methodology applied in airports for establishing Safety Indicators in accordance with the recommendations of ICAO, and it was motivated by the need to identify which events generate the greatest impact on airport safety and prioritize actions plan and resources allocation. It is also a tool to support airport management decisions and to keep safety levels under control. For the case study, was chosen Sao Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport, using data from ramp occurrences in the analysis of this paper, due to the fact they generate significant losses for airlines. The proposed methodology consists of transforming the current qualitative Safety risk assessment matrix into a quantitative matrix, adopting values for grading the risk severity in an exponential rate, so as to assign “weights” for each occurrence.
