Liquid organisation during capillary rise in yarns-influence of yarn torsion

Capillary flow in polyester (PET) yarn is studied by Image Analysis of liquid rising into the yarn. Considering the yarn at various levels of saturation, we established an experimental law between the intensity of the signals, expressed in grey levels, and the quantity of liquid in a yarn area. This relationship allowed us to make more precise studies on the liquid distribution inside the yarn during capillary rise. The influence of yarn torsion on the liquid distribution into PET yarn was determined. These experiments contribute to a description of the heterogeneous structure of yarns and to a better knowledge of the wicking of yarns with liquids.
