Analytical modeling of multiclass on/off services in cellular CDMA systems by leaky buckets

An approximate analytical formulation of the packet level and link layer qualities of service (QoS) for multiclass on/off services in a cellular CDMA system is presented. The novelty of this paper is that the packet buffers of mobiles at the uplink of a cellular CDMA network are viewed and modeled as leaky buckets. A leaky bucket is a policing device commonly used to regulate and enforce traffic agreements. The relationship for the packet loss probability in terms of its outage probability, and the relationship for the outage probability in terms of the number of connections, the mean connection on/off periods and packet level QoS metric like the mean packet buffering delay are explicitly derived. The lengthening effect on the uplink CDMA channel activity factor due to packet buffers at the mobiles is also studied. Numerical results illustrate that packet buffers can lower the packet loss probability at the expense of increasing the mean packet buffering delay and outage probability.
