An overview of reliable multicasting

Increases in Internet bandwidth have spurred interest in using it to coordinate geographically distributed project teams. This requires real-time video conferencing and group editing tools. Others are interested in delivering entertainment of lectures. These applications must transmit simultaneously and efficiently to many hosts. In order to preserve network bandwidth, the Internet-backbone routers use IP-multicasting to a message to be send to many hosts without duplication while it travels the backbone. However, IP-multicasting is a best effort service without guarantees about delivery or correctness. It is left to the multicast transport protocol to implement reliability. This paper surveys issues of reliability and routing. It discusses the terms used in multicast protocols and several experimental protocols. It gives an overview of the theoretical performance limits for the various types of reliable multicast protocols. Nest, it discusses current multicast routing algorithms. Finally, a survey of current and experimental multicast routing protocols is given.
