Application of the MLFMM to Calderon preconditioning for the EFIE

Recently, several papers have proposed using the Calderon identities to develop an analytic preconditioner for the electric field integral equation (EFIE) [1, 2]. We extend these results by first giving simple, physical explanations for Calderon preconditioning and the special basis functions used to implement the method. Also, it is shown that the preconditioner can be easily integrated with the fast multipole method to allow for solving large problems. Finally, numerical results demonstrate that the preconditioner is effective even in the presence of a dense mesh and geometric singularities.
