Delivering HD video for wireless in-flight entertainment with IEEE 802.15.3c

The trend in in-flight entertainment systems is for wireless transmission and connectivity enabling passengers to access both live and embedded system content in-seat and on their personal electronic devices. To date, the available solutions based on WLAN technology only guarantee provision to a limited number of clients. In this paper, a solution is presented for the provision of full audio/video-on-demand throughout the aircraft cabin via a wireless system. The system is based on the IEEE 802.15.3c standard using the 60 GHz frequency band. An implementation of the CTA relinquish mechanism is used to improve the quality-of-service of High-Definition Video transmission. A major limitation of transmission at 60 GHz is time-variant shadowing by human bodies. A relay-based link-switch solution to this problem is presented.
