Single frequency satellite networks: a novel approach for multi-spot broadcasting

This paper describes the novel concept of single frequency broadcast networks over multi-beam satellites. The technique is based on the use of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing and on the creation of synthetic multipath at the gateway. The synthetic power delay profile is beam specific, and it is the key instrument that allows to avoid destructive interference amongst the signals transmitted from the various beams. The main advantages of this approach consist in the possibility to: use high gain narrow beams that improve the link budget and the coverage contour; allow the efficient delivery of local content; enable to reuse the same satellite antenna pattern for broadband and broadcasting applications and triple-play services.
