Analysis of color distortion and improvement for IHS image fusion

IHS (intensity, hue, and saturation) transformation is one of the most commonly used fusion algorithm in remote sensing community. The traditional IHS method is to replace intensity component I/sub 0/ with a new intensity component I/sub new/ of high-resolution images in IHS color space. In this paper, a study on IHS fusion indicates that the color distortion can't be avoided in this method. An improved IHS (IIHS) fusion method, which rectifying the replaced intensity component by using proper weight coefficients of I/sub new/ and I/sub 0/, is proposed to reduce the color distortion. As an example, IIHS algorithm is applied to fuse images of SPOT and Landsat TM. Experiment results prove that it is a practical and effective method.
